15 Districts in Gujarat Rain Deficient in Monsoon 2026 So Far

Gandhinagar: Gujarat has recorded around 15% below-normal rainfall so far this monsoon season, with the state receiving 514.3 mm against the normal 605.1 mm between June 1 and September 2, according to the latest data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ahmedabad.

The latest district-wise data shows that 15 districts are facing rainfall deficiency, including four that have slipped into the ‘large deficient’ category, while only a handful of districts have recorded excess rainfall.

Among the worst-affected districts, Devbhumi Dwarka has recorded an 88% rainfall deficit, with just 58.4 mm of rain against its normal 477.7 mm. Porbandar is next with a 73% deficit, having received 161.4 mm against 587.8 mm. Meanwhile, Jamnagar and Kutch have each recorded a 60% deficit. As per the IMD classification, districts recording a rainfall deficiency of 60% to 99% are categorised as ‘large deficient’.

Other districts fall under the ‘deficient’ category, with rainfall deficiency ranging from 20% to 59%. Among these, Aravalli has recorded a 46% deficiency, followed by Dahod (45%), Sabarkantha (43%), Gir Somnath (39%), Junagadh (36%) and Rajkot (33%). Vadodara has recorded a 30% deficiency, Chhota Udepur 29%, while Banaskantha and Gandhinagar have each recorded a 26% deficiency. Mehsana has recorded a 25% deficiency.

In contrast, Valsad has recorded the highest rainfall surplus among Gujarat districts at 53%, receiving 2,719.1 mm against a normal 1,782.9 mm. Navsari is 42% above normal, while Surat and Bharuch have recorded surpluses of 34% and 20%, respectively. Kheda and Dang have also recorded above-normal rainfall, at 24% and 23%, respectively.

The situation is particularly uneven across Saurashtra and Kutch, where the subdivision as a whole has received 292.5 mm against a normal 454.9 mm, resulting in a 36% deficit. While Surendranagar (+11%), Amreli (+6%), Morbi (+3%) and Bhavnagar (+1%) remain around or above normal, several other districts are significantly deficient.

The IMD divides Gujarat into two regions. The Gujarat Region, which covers South, Central and North Gujarat, has recorded 541.4 mm against a normal 566.5 mm, resulting in a 4% deficit. In comparison, the Saurashtra and Kutch region has remained much drier, with a 36% rainfall deficit.

Notably, in a concerning development, the IMD, in its monthly rainfall forecast issued on Monday, stated that Gujarat is expected to receive below-normal rainfall in September as well, which could further worsen the rainfall deficit in the coming days.
