Gujarat Govt Buildings Have 95 MW Rooftop Solar Capacity, Another 65 MW Planned This Year
October 05, 2026
Gandhinagar: Government buildings across Gujarat are increasingly being powered by solar energy, with the state government undertaking large-scale installation of rooftop solar systems.
So far, rooftop solar systems have been installed on 6,014 government buildings across the state. The government has set a target of installing rooftop solar systems on an additional 15,000 government buildings during 2026-27, which is expected to add around 65 MW of solar power capacity.
The initiative has been implemented by the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) under the Climate Change Department since 2011-12 to promote the use of renewable energy.
Climate Change Minister Arjun Modhwadia said rooftop solar systems were installed on 1,377 government buildings during 2025-26, adding 17.1 MW of renewable energy capacity. With this expansion, the number of government buildings equipped with rooftop solar systems reached 6,014 by March 2026, with their combined installed solar capacity reaching 95 MW.
Target to Add 65 MW in 2026-27
The Gujarat government has planned a major expansion of the programme during the current financial year.
Modhwadia said the government has set a target of installing rooftop solar systems on 15,000 government buildings in 2026-27, which is expected to add approximately 65 MW of solar capacity.
The programme is aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy and reducing dependence on conventional sources of electricity by turning government building rooftops into power-generating assets.
Minister of State for Climate Change Pravin Mali said the installation of solar systems would reduce the consumption of conventional electricity and help lower electricity costs for government offices. He also highlighted the potential environmental and economic benefits, including reduced pollution associated with conventional power generation.
A budget provision of ₹314 crore has been made for the programme for 2026-27. Of this, ₹278 crore has been allocated for general government buildings and ₹3 crore for buildings under the Social Justice and Empowerment Department. An allocation of ₹33 crore has been made for buildings under the Tribal Development Department, according to Dharmendra Patel, IAS, Director of GEDA.
Under the scheme, rooftop solar systems are installed on government-owned buildings in Gujarat. The Climate Change Department provides financial assistance covering 100% of the capital expenditure through annual budget allocations.
Gujarat Leads in Renewable Energy Capacity
According to recent data from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Gujarat has an installed renewable energy capacity of 47,178 MW. The state has recorded a significant increase in renewable energy capacity and has surpassed Rajasthan to emerge as the leading state in the country in installed renewable energy capacity.
IIoT-Based Monitoring System Introduced
The Gujarat government has also introduced an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-based renewable energy monitoring system to track renewable energy installations on government buildings.
According to Modhwadia, the system uses smart meters, sensors and IoT gateways connected through GPRS, 4G and the internet. It provides automated remote alerts and collects operational data every 15 minutes, generating up to 96 readings a day.
The system is currently monitoring renewable energy generation capacities of around 142.5 MW of solar power and 68.3 MW of wind power.
I have also corrected the budget allocation section based on the figures provided in your text, including the ₹33 crore Tribal Development allocation, where the original had an incomplete figure. DeshGujarat
