Surat Airport Expands Use of Renewable Energy

Surat: Surat International Airport has expanded its use of renewable energy through solar power generation and procurement of green electricity, along with measures to reuse treated wastewater.

The airport has installed two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants with a combined capacity of 140 kWp. The plants generate about 533 units of electricity a day, amounting to approximately 17,000 units a month.

The solar installations reduce the airport’s electricity expenditure by around ₹1.26 lakh per month, according to the information provided by the airport authorities.

The airport is also procuring green electricity from the distribution company (DISCOM) under Gujarat’s green tariff mechanism. It pays an additional ₹0.90 per unit for green power, with the airport’s electricity requirement being met through green energy under the arrangement.

Treated wastewater reused

Surat Airport has a 210 KLD sewage treatment plant (STP) for treating wastewater generated at the facility. The treated water is reused for gardens, plants and landscaping within the airport premises.

The measures are aimed at increasing the use of renewable energy, reducing conventional electricity consumption and promoting the reuse of water at the airport.

Surat Airport is among Airports Authority of India (AAI)-managed airports implementing measures related to renewable energy, energy efficiency and water conservation. DeshGujarat
