October 05, 2026
Ahmedabad: Work on Phase-II of the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project is progressing, with 82% of the overall work completed so far, according to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation officials.
The Phase-II project covers an 11-km stretch along both banks of the Sabarmati River, from Dafnala to Indira Bridge, at an estimated cost of ₹1,285 crore. The project is being implemented in addition to the existing riverfront development.
Of the ₹399.39 crore retaining wall and infrastructure works, 89.50% has been completed. The overall Phase-II project is scheduled for completion by December 2027.
The expanded riverfront is planned with a focus on green spaces and public amenities. It will feature stepped embankments, children’s play areas, food plazas, seating spaces and areas for art, culture and recreational activities.
Phase-III work also underway
Work on Phase-III, from Indira Bridge to the Narmada Main Canal, has also commenced at an estimated cost of ₹1,000 crore. Officials said 17% of the Phase-III work has been completed so far.
The phase will include 10 viewing plazas, green zones on both banks and the plantation of more than 20,000 trees at the lower promenade level. The project is targeted for completion in 2028-29.
Road construction on both banks, estimated to cost ₹180 crore, has achieved 9.75% progress, according to the project details.
6-lane barrage-cum-bridge
A 1,048-metre-long, six-lane barrage-cum-bridge is also being constructed between Acher and Camp Sadar Bazar at a cost of ₹293.42 crore. Around 35.25% of the work has been completed.
The structure will incorporate a 3.5-metre-high automatic air-filled rubber barrage, designed to regulate water while allowing floodwater to pass without obstruction. The bridge is expected to improve connectivity towards Ahmedabad airport and Gandhinagar.
With the expansion, the Sabarmati Riverfront is planned to extend to 34 km from Vasna Barrage to Indira Bridge, providing a longer river-side corridor for transportation, recreation and public spaces. DeshGujarat
