Two-headed wolf snake found in Dahod, first such case reported in Gujarat

Dahod: A rare two-headed snake has been found in Dahod district, with wildlife rescuers identifying it as a non-venomous wolf snake. The unusual snake was spotted in the Dhanpur range and was subsequently brought safely to Dahod by a rescue team.

According to Kinnar Desai, convener of the rescue team of Prakruti Mitra Mandal, the team was informed about the unusual snake after it was spotted in the Dhanpur range. A member of the rescue team reached the location, rescued the snake and brought it safely to Dahod for observation.

“After observing the snake, we sent its photographs to experts for identification. It was found to be a wolf snake, which is non-venomous. It is five to six inches long in size. The snake is newly born,” Desai said.

The snake has two heads, with the two heads functioning independently, while the body becomes single after the neck. Such a condition, known as bicephaly, is a rare developmental abnormality in snakes.

Desai said this is reportedly the first such two-faced snake recorded in Gujarat. At the national level, he said, this is the fifth reported case, and the third involving a wolf snake.

The rescue team is continuing to observe the snake and has shared photographs with experts for further confirmation and documentation of the rare occurrence. DeshGujarat
