Vadodara Civic Body Proposes New Route for Flood-Prone Bhukhi Canal
November 06, 2026
Vadodara: The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has proposed an alternative alignment for rerouting the flood-prone Bhukhi canal through a stormwater channel parallel to National Highway 48, following local opposition to the original plan.
The revised proposal, based on recommendations of the Navlawala Committee to address recurring floods, will be placed before the VMC standing committee on Friday.
The project comprises two phases: rerouting the canal up to Chhani Jakatnaka and extending the channel from there towards the Nizampura crematorium.
VMC had approved the first phase at ₹18.63 crore, awarding the contract to Rajkamal Builders Infrastructure Pvt Ltd at 1.5% below the estimated cost. The second phase was approved at ₹21.66 crore, with Shivay Infra Project Pvt Ltd securing the contract at 2.39% below the estimate.
However, objections to the original alignment stalled the project. VMC is now considering executing the remaining work along the revised route through existing contractors or by inviting fresh quotations.
The standing committee will review the realignment and decide the next course of action. DeshGujarat
