Mahesana, 6 September, 2010

North Gujarat’s Vijapur town observed complete strike on Monday, protesting brutal killing of four cows in the town.

Bovine slaughter is banned in Gujarat, and state government’s this resolution has been upheld by the Supreme court of India in past. However, incidents of slaughter of cows by Muslim community frequently come into light, and many time spark communal tension.

The incident of Vijapur is latest in this series. Vijapur’s Dharmsinhbhai Rabari’s four cows were stolen on 4 September night. The butchers killed these cows during the late night hours, took away its flesh, and left the remaining bodies at public place. Early in the morning, when local people watched the dead bodies of brutally killed cows opposite the bus station, the anger was brewing.

A rally was organized on Sunday itself protesting the killings. A memorandum was submitted to district police chief, who personally reached Vijapur and reportedly idebtified three possible culprits.

Meanwhile, the town observed complete strike on Monday, demanding arrest of the culprits. Local lawyers are agreed to public demand, that none of them will represent the culprits in court.

It should be mentioned that currently there’s auspicious Shravan and Paryushan days season, and local people are not ready to tolerate illegal cow slaughters.

Though the local unit of BJP was not in support, the people of Vijapur made the strike completely successful.
