Pilot project of hydrogen distribution through PNG to start from Surat; Floating Solar plant commissioning likely in July

Surat: The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Gujarat Gas have started the pilot project of green hydrogen blended piped natural gas (PNG) supply in NTPC Kawas township in Hazira, Surat.

NTPC has inked a pact with Gujarat Gas on Tuesday to blend green hydrogen in PNG network at NTPC Kawas in Surat. The formal agreement was signed on Tuesday between Mohan Bhargava, CEO of NTPC (REL) and Gujarat Gas Ltd MD Sanjeev Kumar. The green hydrogen will be produced through the electrolysis process using 1-megawatt floating solar project at NTPC Kawas. The green hydrogen will be blended in a predetermined proportion with PNG. It will be used for cooking applications in the township.

The proportion of hydrogen blending in the PNG will be around 5 percent initially. It will be further increased after successful completion.

Meanwhile, after commissioning of 1 MW floating power plant at NTPC Kawas, the next move shall be commissioning of Gujarat’s largest floating 56 MW solar power project at a reservoir based in Kawas. The likely date of commissioning of this largest floating solar plant of the State is in July this year. The other ground mounted portion will be commissioned in next two months after July

The company stores rain water in reservoir where floating solar plant is being erected. In addition tot his, possibilities are being explored for setting a green hydro plant in Kawas. According to NTPC Kawas general manager Kulvindar Singh, the company aims to achieve 1,30,000 MW power target by year 2032. The company at present generates 68,567.18 MW power across 25 NTPC power stations.
