Kejriwal moves to Gujarat HC seeking stay on GU defamation case
August 10, 2023
Ahmedabad: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has appealed to the Gujarat High Court to halt the summons and delay the proceedings in the metropolitan court regarding a defamation complaint filed by Gujarat University (GU).
This follows a denial of his previous application for the same by a city sessions court. The complaint relates to alleged remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree made by Kejriwal and AAP member Sanjay Singh. The two politicians had challenged the metropolitan court’s decision, but their request for a 90-day adjournment was rejected by the sessions court.
Kejriwal’s urgent hearing request was granted, is scheduled for August 11, the same day they are summoned in the metropolitan court.
In April, the metropolitan court issued summonses to Kejriwal and Singh after recognizing a defamation complaint filed by GU registrar Piyush Patel. This complaint was in response to press conferences held and posts made on Twitter by Kejriwal on April 1 and by Singh on April 2. GU sought action against them under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code. This occurred after the Gujarat High Court supported GU’s decision not to disclose Modi’s MA degree under RTI provisions, subsequently imposing a fine of Rs 25,000 on the Delhi CM. DeshGujarat
