July 26, 2024
Vadodara: In further ease to the people of Vadodara, the administration has stopped discharging water from Ajwa dam. The government has also decided to maintain the level of 212.50 ft at Ajwa instead of 211 ft upto 15 August. Due to this decision, the level of the river Vishwamitri has come down, and the danger of flooding in Vadodara has been for now averted.
Due to the release of water from the Ajwa dam reservoir by opening its 62 gates in order to maintain the level to 211 ft up to August 15, the level of Vishwamitri had gone up to 29.41 ft last evening. However, last evening, some crucial decisions were taken to save Vadodara from flood for now. Accordingly, Ajwa’s level would be maintained at 212.50 ft instead of 211 ft. The release of water downstream was stopped subsequently.
In other decisions, the level of water in the Vishwamitri River will not be allowed to rise beyond the 30 ft mark. The level of water in Pratappura reservoir will be maintained at 228 ft. The decision was taken in a meeting of the government officials of concerned departments.
On July 24th, Vadodara received 10 inches of rain in 14 hours, which can be classified as extremely heavy rainfall. Due to heavy rain in the Central Gujarat region, including the areas that form the catchment of the Ajwa dam, the Dev and Dhadhar rivers, and the Vishwamitri river, the level of Vishwamitri rose up to 29.41 ft. The level has been going down since the morning. The danger level of the Vishwamitri River at Kalaghoda Bridge in Vadodara is 26 ft. DeshGujarat
