Navsari Flood: Purna river flowing above danger mark, up to chest-deep waterlogging, thousands stranded

Navsari: There’s a flood like situation in parts of the district headquarters Navsari in South Gujarat. Flood water of river Purna is upto chest deep in many residential areas. 1000s of people are stuck in their houses due to flood water in areas like Bhestkhada.

At 6 am on Friday(today) the level of water touched 16 ft mark against danger level of 23 ft. In just two hours after that the level crossed the 23 ft danger mark. Machhi market, Kamela road, Shantadevi, Viraval, other areas soon witnessed water logging.

While Puna river was flowing at 29.50 ft level against danger level of 23 ft, Ambika river was flowing at 26.40 ft level against danger level of 28 ft. Kaveri river was flowing at 13 ft level against danger level of 19 ft.

Holiday in schools/colleges is declared in the district due to this situation. Traffic on Navsari – Surat state highway is also affected.

According to the district collector, over 2200 people are shifted to shelter homes where medical teams are deployed. 10 pregnant women are safely transported to the hospital. 17 roads are closed in the city due to flood.

 

Amalsad – Dhamdachha low line bridge submerged in flood water. Due to discharge of water from Devdha dam, the link between Bilimora and Devdha faced disruption.

The Purna River running through the district is currently at 28 feet, significantly exceeding the danger mark of 23 feet, due to heavy rainfall in the district and its upstream basin over the past 24 hours,” stated Navsari collector Kshipra Agre.
