Vadodara: City-based 66-year-old consumer rights activist Purushottam Moorjani (PV Moorjani) committed suicide by a shot from his licensed revolver due to an extortion threat of a fake rape complaint by Komal Sikligar and her mother, Sangita Sikligar. After Moorjani’s sad death by suicide, both Komal and Sangita are on the run. Police found their last location in Anand. Moorjani’s wife, Jagruti, has sought justice over her husband’s death.
Before his suicide, Moorjani scheduled a message on WhatsApp, which was sent to multiple persons, including media personnel. He shared the details of the reasons behind his suicide in this message. He said he was committing suicide fearing a possible blot on his image, which he built over decades of activism, as Komal Sikligar and her mother Sangita threatened to file a fake rape complaint with the police if Moorjani’s properties were not documented in the name of Komal and Sangita. While threatening Moorjani, Komal and Sangita gave an example of a similar rape complaint against two gentlemen, including CA Ashok Jain and builder Naval Thakkar. The Sikligars threatened Moorjani that he must leave his wife and transfer his properties to them on paper or face a rape complaint.
Moorjani’s properties include the land of Somnath petrol pump and his bungalow. Moorjani wanted to pass on his properties to his wife. However, Komal and Sangita were threatening Moorjani to transfer the properties to their name or face a rape complaint.
Moorjani committed suicide between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm at his residence, Narayan Duplex, located on Vaghodiya Road on Friday. In his message before death, Moorjani said he was tortured and kept hungry by Komal and Sangita. He was badly beaten by both. Komal and Sangita fought with Moorjani when he took his wife for a ride in a newly purchased Rs. 1.04 crore Mercedes car. Komal and Sangita argued about why they were not taken in the car first. They also demanded that Moorjani separate from his wife.
Moorjani had considered Komal as his daughter. Komal and Sangita were living in a house in Vadodara, about 3 km from Moorjani’s residence. Moorjani paid the EMI for this house and had paid half the cost of the Sikligars’ Kanha Luxuria house. He had a licensed revolver, which was surrendered to the police before the election. He visited the police station, retrieved his revolver, wrote a long suicide note scheduled as a WhatsApp message, reached his residence, and committed suicide.
Moorjani detailed his assets in his WhatsApp note and appointed his niece as the sole arbitrator. He mentioned that he prepared a will to transfer all properties to his wife.
Moorjani had been active in consumer rights activism for the last four and a half decades. He was operating a consumer organization named Jagrut Nagrik. Panigate Police is investigating this case under the supervision of DCP Zone-3, Lina Patil. The police received information regarding Moorjani’s suicide at 8:56 pm on Friday through Moorjani’s niece. His scheduled message reached hundreds of people at 9:51 pm. Komal Moorjani has described herself on her Facebook profile as Sub-Editor at Jagrut Nagrik Grahak Suraksha Bhavan in the Karelibaug area. She has also described herself as CEO and owner of Somnath Petroleum. Moorjani’s wife was visiting a temple when he committed suicide. According to his last message, Komal and Sangita also pressured Moorjani to post a photo on Facebook showing Komal and Moorjani with the newly purchased Mercedes car, which he later posted under their pressure.
