Rajkot: To address growing traffic congestion on the busy Rajkot-Bhavnagar highway, the state government has planned to convert it into a six-lane high-speed road corridor between the two cities. The project, estimated at ₹2,100 crore, aims to benefit over 27,000 cars daily.

It is learnt that the proposed high-speed corridor will span 180 km, and of the total budgeted amount, ₹295 crore has already been approved for the first phase. As part of the groundwork, Macway Consultancy has been tasked with surveying the number of establishments—including hotels, restaurants, and residences—along the route, as well as assessing the extent of land acquisition required and the presence of religious structures.

In the initial phase, a 70-km stretch will be developed by the Road and Building Department. This phase will include land acquisition, surface upgrades, construction of new flyovers, and removal of encroachments along the route.

The decision to convert high-traffic highways into high-speed corridors was announced last year. In addition to the Rajkot-Bhavnagar stretch, five other highways—Wataman-Pipli, Surat-Sachin-Navsari, Ahmedabad-Dakor, Bhuj-Bhachau, and Mehsana-Palanpur—are also being developed as high-speed corridors.
