Hirin coolie at Ahmedabad railway station? Beware of fake ones stealing luggage
May 13, 2025
Ahmedabad: If you are traveling from Kalupur Railway Station, beware of fake porters (coolies) wearing red uniforms who offer to carry luggage—only to steal it.
Recently, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested five individuals posing as licensed porters at the station. The fraud was uncovered during a routine inspection led by RPF officer Vijendra Singh Yadav, who noticed irregularities in their behavior and documents. The suspects were wearing the red uniforms typically worn by official porters, but when questioned, they couldn’t provide valid porter identification cards, or “Billa.”
During the investigation, it was found that in some cases, sons of licensed porters at Kalupur Railway Station use their fathers’ Billa to work unofficially. While this violates railway rules, it does happen occasionally. The police strongly advise passengers to verify a porter’s Billa and ensure it matches the person carrying their luggage.
However, in some cases, bogus coolies have been involved in stealing luggage. The Government Railway Police (GRP) has confirmed receiving several complaints about such incidents and has urged passengers to always verify a porter’s identification badge (Billa) before handing over their belongings.
To tackle the growing issue, the Railway Protection Force has increased patrolling at the station, especially during peak hours, and is working in coordination with the Coolie Association. DeshGujarat
