AI Reconstructs “Original” Modhera Sun Temple Before Its Destruction; Centuries-Old Grandeur Reborn

Gandhinagar: Most visitors to the 1,000 years old Sun Temple at Modhera in North Gujarat know that this remarkable monument, built by King Bhimdev of the Solanki dynasty, does not stand today in its original form. Historical records note that the temple was vandalized by Islamic invaders, who used gunpowder to blow up the garbha-griha, shikharas, and upper portions of the structure. Many murtis on the ground floor were also destroyed. What survives now is the ground floor—damaged yet still imposing in its scale and craftsmanship.

To explore how the temple might have originally looked before the destruction, DeshGujarat Lab turned to Artificial Intelligence. Using AI tools, the team generated a series of engaging videos attempting to reconstruct the temple’s lost upper structure. The existing ground floor has been shown exactly as it stands today—its original height, width, and form unchanged. On this authentic base, the videos visualize how the complete temple may once have appeared.

If you ask any person to imagine the Modhera Sun Temple in its original grandeur, most would simply place two shikhars above the surviving structure. But Artificial Intelligence goes far beyond the limits of ordinary human imagination. It reconstructs a multi-tiered upper structure with multiple shikhars, drawing on a wide range of Hindu temple architectural styles from different periods. The result is a visually rich and surprisingly diverse set of interpretations—an engaging and delightful visual experience.

The toran, kund, and other surviving structures remain visible in their present form. The purpose of the experiment is solely to imagine the temple’s original grandeur. While AI has natural limitations, the technology has produced striking visual interpretations, reflecting various traditions of Hindu temple architecture. Several clips vividly evoke the medieval architectural style of Gujarat, while others present spire designs inspired by different schools of Hindu temple construction—creative liberties taken by the system where necessary.

Far from common digital gimmicks, this reconstruction is a thoughtful use of Artificial Intelligence. In fact, the presenter, her voice, the captions, and every frame illustrating possible versions of the original Modhera Sun Temple were created using AI.

So press ‘play’ and step back into medieval Gujarat—into the Solanki era—to glimpse how the magnificent Modhera Sun Temple may have once stood in its full glory. DeshGujarat
