March 18, 2026
Gandhinagar: A total of 448 leopards have been captured across Gujarat in the last two years, as of December 31, 2025, due to rising human-wildlife conflict, the state government informed the Gujarat Assembly.
Replying to a question, the Forest Minister said that of the total leopards captured during this period, 74 have been housed in rescue centres, while 12 have been kept in zoos.
The remaining leopards were reportedly released back into the wild as per standard forest department protocols. The figures highlight the increasing instances of human-leopard conflict in the state, particularly in areas adjoining forest zones and expanding urban settlements.
