Police jeep burnt in Juhapura during cows rescuing operation(updated)



Ahmedabad, 29 October, 2011

A rioting group today evening burnt a police vehicle in Muslims dominated Juhapura area of Ahmedabad. At least two policemen are injured in this incident. One of them has been admitted in hospital and undergoing treatment. Fire brigade team escorted by police, controlled fire, but until then the police vehicle had almost turned to ashes. City police has deployed extra force in this area.

The incident took place after police raided a particular place in Juhapura and captured 12 calves illegally kept there for slaughter.

Local butchers powered by other locals formed mobs opposing police action and pelted stones over police team. They also burnt a police jeep. A driver and another policeman sitting in police jeep were injured due to stone pelting. They somehow escaped the place and were later taken to VS hospital for treatment.

Joint Police Commissioner Ajay Tomar and city police Crime Branch team arrived at the spot and told media persons that they were instructed by Police Commissioner that those involved in this attack on police must be arrested in three days. City Police Commissioner has also ordered that those involved in this incident should be sent to jail under PASA.

It should be mentioned that this is second attack on police in Ahmedabdad in one week, during cow rescuing operation of police. Early this week a team of police and Vishwa Hindu Parishad workers was attacked in Muslim dominated Dariapur area early in the morning during cow rescuing operation.

In Gujarat, bovine slaughter is banned under newly amended stringent law.

-Police vehicle burnt was the last in convoy and therefore it was attacked and burnt.
-First it was turned upside down and then diesel tank was opened. Adding to this some kerosene was also used to burn the police vehicle.
-As soon as the vehicle started catching up fire, locals shut down their shops and each and every person fled away.

-Four persons are held by police in connection with yesterday’s incident.
-Two more calves rescued from Juhapura by Vejalpur police.
-Main suspect, a butcher is still at large.

-Total six persons are arrested including the main suspect Iqbal.
-Police has listed 16 names of local butchers. Police teams are active in nabbing them.
-First information report(FIR) is concrete and solid. Culprits will be booked in offense like attempt of murder of police constables on duty.
-Two Muslim constable of d-staff are main witness in this case.
