Reliance Industries Limited Chairman Mukesh Ambani had promised to set up a world-class university in Gujarat, during his Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit – 2007 speech. But from then, till now, there has been hardly any further word on this from Mukesh’s side, and almost nothing has materialized on the ground. Now after three and half years, Shri Mukesh Ambani has talked again about world-class university. Shri Mukesh Ambani made an announcement about his plan to set up a world-class university in RIL’s 36th AGM meeting speech in Mumbai on Friday, 18 June. However he did not mention proposed university’s location, but if we recall his promise made in Ahmedabad in year 2007, it is likely that the proposed university will most probably come up in Gujarat.
In his AGM speech on Friday, Mukesh Ambani announced the launch of the Reliance Foundation, and said, “one of the first engagements that the Reliance Foundation is taking up is developing a world-class university.”
“India needs innumerable institutions of higher learning and research in order to complete globally based on knowledge and innovation. The university is envisaged to be broad-based in its course offering, ranging from pure and applied sciences to fine and performing arts, and international in its faculty and student profile,” he added.
“Like other business initiatives of Reliance, the University is also guided by a transformational ambition – that of enabling Indian students to study in a world-class University in India, and also of attracting the best of foreign students to study here,” he further added.
It should be mentioned that while making other announcements, Mukesh Ambani clearly mentioned their locations, but when it came to the announcement of world-class university, he didn’t mention any specific location.
Last year Mukesh Ambani’s key person in Gujarat Shri Parimal Nathwani announced that RIL would start world-class engineering colleges in Gujarat’s Jamnagar and Vadodara and also a polytechnic college of diploma engineering in Dwarka in Gujarat. Parimal Nathwani, group President of RIL in Gujarat announced this at an inaugural function of Khodiar colony branch of Navanagar cooperative bank in Jamnagar in the month of October.
