Rs.300-cr new cancer hospital,medical college in 2011 in Ahmedabad

A new super specialty cancer hospital being built on the site of New Swadesi Mill Compound in Ahmedabad is set to begin its OPD ward from November 11. A self-financed medical college will also start enrolling from the August next year.

Talking to a press conference here at Ahmedabad Health Minister Shri Jaynarayan Vyas said that this super specialty hospital, founded by Gujarat Cancer Society on the expense of Rs.300-crore, is equipped with 320 beds. Hospital and linked research centre and medical college will be at par with the best in the country on the count of construction, facilities and medical expertise. Providing good facilities to patients as well a staff giving empathic treatment, has been given a high importance.

He said that a self-financed medical college will also begin from the next year on the same site where 150 seats will be filled in the first year. State government is in touch with Medical Council of India for the same. He added that the state government has planned to start new medical colleges in the state. This will increase nearly 7,500 beds in next five years, enabling more patients to take timely treatment.

Shri Vyas informed that around one crore people is getting affected by cancer every year and 50-lakh dies due to untimely diagnosis and unavailability of latest treatment. Lifestyle changes have also made younger people catch this life-threatening disease. A super specialty hospital in such times will like a blessing for cancer patients.

Chairman of Gujarat Cancer Society Shri Pankaj Patel, Director of M.P.Shah Cancer Hospital Dr.Pankaj Shah along with senior doctors were also present on the occasion. Dr. Pankaj Shah said that this newly built hospital will have latest facilities like trauma centre, day stay unit, four operation theaters, labor rooms, radiology department, pathology, biochemistry, microbiology lab and blood bank.

Gujarat government, a year back, had given a 25-acre land on the site of New Swadeshi Mill Compound to Gujarat Cancer Society, to start a hospital and a medical college and thus to broaden the base of medical services and education in the state. Cancer society rapidly worked upon it and has erected the most part of this super specialty hospital and medical college within a span of one year.
