Depression moves over Saurashtra, IMD predicts heavy rainfall

India Meteorological Department(IMD)’s Gujarat region office based in Ahmedabad today issued warning of heavy rainfall over Gujarat’s Saurashtra, Kutch and parts of South Gujarat along with neighboring Diu, Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli.
Synoptic condition narrated by IMD today morning said, “Yesterday depression over northeast Arabian sea and adjoining off Maharashtra-Gujarat coasts moved northnorthwestwards and crossed Saurashtra coast about 25 km east of Diu in early morning and lay centred at 0300uts (0830 hrs ist) of today, the 12 June 2011 about 70 km southsouthwest of Amreli. It would move northwestwards and weaken gradually during next 24 hours.”
Accordingly the department has predicted light to moderate rain/thundershowers at few places in north Gujarat and moderate to rather heavy rain/thundershowers at many places in south Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch.
The department has issued warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places over Saurashtra, Kutch and in Diu. “Heavy rains would also occur at isolated places over south Gujarat region and Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli during next 36 hours,” the IMD bulletin said.
It should be mentioned that on Friday, coastal Saurashtra’s Sutrapada witnessed 11-inch rain. Other places like Kutiana, Lodhika had 3 inch each, and Keshod, Naliya, Manavadar, Vanthali had 2 cms each rain. Rajkot, Gondal, Khambhaliya etc were other places where rain occured.
IMD has also issued port warning bulletin stating that under influence of the system markedly squally weather would prevail at Gujarat ports during 24 hours(starting from 12 June morning). Therefore fishermen are advised not to go out in the sea during that time.
IMD has instructed in its bulletin to keep hoisted LCS-III at all ports of south Gujarat coast. IMD has predicted rough to very rough Gujarat coast with southwesterly 25-3- KTS gusting to 35 KTS.
