Modi requests centre to allot Pravasi Bharatiya Divas function of year 2015 to Gujarat

Ahmedabad, 9 January 2013

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has proposed the central government to hold annual Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in year 2015 in Gujarat.

Addressing the Gujarat session of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Sammelan at Kochi via video conference, Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi said, “Mahatma Gandhi came back to India in 1915. The nation will celebrate 100 years of Gandhi’s arrival from Africa in 2015. And we in Gujarat want to mark this occasion by hosting Pravasi Bharatiya Divas function in our state. I have requested the centre to give us an opportunity to hold this event in Gujarat in 2015 because Pravasi Bharatiya Divas’s date is associated with Gandhi’s arrival in India. I welcome you all to join it, if we get centre’s nod.”

Modi thanked union minister Vyalar Ravi for attending Gujarat session of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas sammelan. He admired that Union minister in his address admired Gujarat and the people of Gujarat.

  1. Good Samaritan says:

    As South African diaspora (that include some of my cousins) would often like to say to fellow Indians in their ancestral homeland – and I quote: “You sent Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to South Africa, and we sent back MAHATMA to India”

    …And rest is history!

    NaMo has an excellent point indeed and I salute him on this point!

    There are millions of NRIs around the world who have skills, vision and wherewithal to change the face of Gujarat and India to the highest standards of the world that exist today!

    Untapped potential in NRIs is huge, but the larger issue is that – Is there a political will to make it easier for that to happen? Bureaucratic hurdles, corruption, public infrastructure in a shambles, transit woes and deteriorating law and order are among the factors that deter NRIs from investing in India.

    Indian political class at large (right from panchayat level to the prime minister) need to understand that they need to be the “change” they want to see in India. A simple act of “change for the better” is more commendable effort than grand plans and intentions. Simple changes do not require enormous budget, resources and time to execute and it would make a sea change in quality of life of the people at large.

    Is it too difficult for the country to offer clean public toilets?

    When you build six lane highways, is it too difficult to enforce strictest traffic rules in the interest of public safely? I have seen people driving in wrong directions on these highways(even thru toll-booths) endangering life of themselves and others. Often, this is caused by poor design of highways that lack overpass and underpass for people to make u-turn. Why can’t the contractors and government agencies be responsible for sub-standard designs be held responsible for playing with public safety?

    Why there are beggers in trains even in reservation compartments? Because ticket checkers busy with assigning unfilled seats to bribe paying passengers? Why don’t they enforce tickets checking for these regularly traveling beggers? May be ministry of railways could earn revenue if they sell begging rights for each train routes and segments? Why can’t those beggers could be gainfully employed to keep the trains and lavatories clean? (I urge people to record those corrupt TTEs [traveling ticket examiners] by recording discretely on their phones and posting on youtube}

    Why there are many cases of land-grabbing going on nation wide? Why is it impossible to win prosecution against culprits even in clear evidence prone cases? Why political class, mafia goons and police are in connivance in these acts making it impossible to get justice for victims in such cases even after spending/bribing fortunes at each and every step because of systemic decay?

    Why toll-booths are with barricades that rival military check-posts thereby endangering the safety of traveling vehicles? Why can’t they install automatic electronic toll collection sensors to prevent holdups at the toll booths?

    In case of accidents, when the victim needs to be rushed to the nearest emergency/hospital and every second counts to save the life, why police waste time to arrive on scene or decide on the jurisdiction or simply do not know what he is she is expected to do? Why doctors do not attend to the victims in seconds upon arrival to the hospital in accident cases? Is there a government standard on how much delay is acceptable delay on part of attending physician? Often these delays are caused because doctor can not be interrupted during lunch break or he or she is busy on the phone talking to their sweetheart!

    The list is endless… may be other readers can continue!
