We watch Ishrat Jahan’s mother Shamima Kausar appearing on TV these days mostly to convey a point that her daughter Ishrat Jahan was innocent! It is obvious for a mother. But as a journalist, I remember Shamima Kausar’s visit to Ahmedabad in 2004. She was here to take her daughter’s dead body. I was not covering crime beat at that time, but I saw her uncut video footage captured by a local TV channel later on. I observed, when asked about her daughter, she was mum. She was then bit fumbling while attempting to reply. As her daughter was killed in encounter, cops in Ahmedabad later questioned Shamima banu. This questioning, most probably was not held in presence of magistrate, and therefore it can’t be considered as evidence. Also, this questioning was not captured in video most probably! Shamima Kausar when left Ahmedabad and reached Mumbra, reportedly backtracked, and said that she gave statement in Ahmedabad under police pressure. Later, Muslim dominated Mumbra observed strike for one-day to support Ishrat’s family. On the other hand, in Ahmedabad the content of questioning was published in media, and here it is collected from the old files:

प्रश्न: हमारे पास इन्फोर्मेशन है की वो दो तीन दफा बहार गई थी।

शमीमा बानू: ये दूसरी बार है। सर्विस लेने को इंटरव्यू देने गई थी।

प्रश्न: अच्छा अच्छा मतलब सर्विस करने के चक्कर में किसीने उसको फसाई हो ऐसा लगता है क्या ?

शमीमा बानू: वैसा ही लगता है। सर्विस करने के लिए जिसको बोला उसीने उसको फसाई।

प्रश्न: नहीं वो जावेद के साथ ही थी तो जावेदने फसाया हो ऐसा लगता है आपको ?

शमीमा बानू: कौन था वो मुझे नहीं मालूम। सर्विस के लिए कहती थी, अम्मी बोम्बे में ओफ़िस हे वहा मतलब बेठना है, कोम्प्यूटर पे बेठना है कोम्पुटर पे। कोम्प्युटर पे बेठना है वहा, और तीन हजार पगार मिलेंगा, तो मेने कहा ठीक है।

प्रश्न: कोम्प्युटर पे बेठके ही काम करना है तो मुम्बरासे मुम्बई जा के श्याम को वापस आ सकती है, तो चार-चार पांच पांच दीन तक कैसे बाहर रहेती है? कम्प्युटर पे बेठना है तो पूरे दिन बेठो और श्याम को वापस जाओ। चार पांच दिन के लिए गुम होने का तो सवाल नहीं होता। इसका मतलब ये है की ऐसा बोल के उसको और कही ले गए होंगे। इसका मतलब ऐसा ही होता है की बंबई में रहती तो वापस आ जाती। एक बार कम्प्युटरमें बैठती और मुम्बई में रहती तो शामको वापस आ जाती। नहीं आई इसका मतलब ये है की और कई जगा पर ले गए होंगे। कैसा मानना है?

शमीमा बानू: हम को ये सब मालूम नहीं हो सकता है। कोम्प्युटर के लिए गए होंगे। कम्प्युटर जानती है इसलिए। वही है ना की सर्विस के बारे में बोले थे। ठीक है सर्विस करने में ऐसी कोइ बात नहीं है।

प्रश्न: किसने बोला था ऐसा?

शमीमा बानू: वो क्या नाम है? वो क्या नाम आपने बताया?

प्रश्न: रशीद।

शमीमा बानू: हां रशीद।

शमीमा बानू: कह रहा था की ऐसी कोइ बात नहीं है, मतलब सब ओफ़िसमे बैठेंगे और ऐसा कुछ काम नहीं है।

प्रश्न: किसकी ओफ़िस में बेठना है ?

शमीमा बानू: वही जावेद की ओफ़िस है वहा बम्बईमे, वहा बेठना है।

प्रश्न: हां तो अब ये बताओ की कैसे हुआ? रशीदने क्या किया? कहां मिले थे? मुलाक़ात आपकी हुई थी ऐसा भी रशीदने बोला है। तो बताओ कैसे कहा मिले थे? क्या बात हुई?

शमीमा बानू: वो बोला। फ़ोन पे ये बात कराया था। फोन पे बात कराया था। रशीद के पास से। फ़ोन था। वही बात कराया था।

प्रश्न: किस के साथ?

शमीमा बानू: जावेद के साथ। आप आपनी लड़की को भेजती है? तो मेने बोला ठीक है ओफ़िसमें बेठना है तो कोइ बात नही। मैंने बोला क्या देंगे ये बताओ। उसने बोला तीन हजार देंगे।

प्रश्न: नहीं, लेकीन उसने चार चार दिन बीचमे आने का बंध कर दिया, तो फीर आपने सामने से पूछा होगाना जावेदसे की भाइ ये तो ओफ़िस में तो नहीं रहते हो, फीर ये चार चार दिन कैसे हो जाते?

शमीमा बानू: वो बोले की मतलब ओफ़िस के काम से जानेका होता है तो उसने बोला के थोडा काम निकलता है तो बाहर जानेका है। लोगो को बताना पडता है की ये चीज कैसे काम आता है। जैसे सेल्समेन आता है ना?

प्रश्न: किसने बोला ऐसा?

शमीमा बानू: जावेदने।

प्रश्न: बाहर जाना पडता है तो कितनी दफा बाहर गयी बता दो। देखो हमारे पास पता है वो कितनी दफा बाहर गयी थी। पहले आपने बताया की एक दफा बाहर गयी थी। लेकिन ज्यादा दफा बाहर गयी थी।

शमीमा बानू: तीन दफा। ये तीसरी दफा था।

प्रश्न: पहली बार?

शमीमा बानू: शायद एक हप्ते के लिये।

प्रश्न: पहली दफा एक हप्ते के लिए, फिर दूसरी दफा?

शमीमा बानू: दूसरी दफा चार-पांच दिन के लिये।

प्रश्न: चार-पांच दिन के लिए, और ये तीसरी दफा थी और आपने पूछा होगा की कहां कहां जाके आई। हफ्ते भर के लिए कहां रहकर आई? माँ पूछती है ये तो बट नेचरल है!

शमीमा बानू: उसने कहा, वो कहा, लखनौ उसके रिश्तेदार थे।

प्रश्न: वो पैसे किसने दिए थे?

शमीमा बानू: जावेदने वहीने दिए थे.

प्रश्न: आप को दिए थे की?

शमीमा बानू: नहीं लड़की के हाथ में दिए थे।

प्रश्न: जावेद के फ़ोन कहा आते थे?

शमीमा बानू: कभी नीचे , कभी ऊपर। वहां एसटीडी पे बहोत कम आते थे। ज्यादातर रशीद आ के बोलता था, बताता था। नहीं रशीद के पास वो फ़ोन था ना ? मोबाईल।

प्रश्न:जब जब बाहर जाना था तब तब कौन छोडने जाता था?

शमीमा बानू: रशीद ले जाता था।

प्रश्न: रशीद ले के जाता था तो कैसे लेके जाता था?

शमीमा बानू: रीक्षामे ले जाता था। शनिवार को नहीं गइ थी। जुम्मा के दिन ही गयी थी सुबह।

प्रश्न: जुम्मा के दिन सुबह गयी थी, कितने बजे गइ थी?

शमीमा बानू: सुबह छ बजे।

प्रश्न: उसके पास मेसेज किसने दिया? कैसे पता चला की जाने का है?

शमीमा बानू: फोन आया था।

प्रश्न: नहीं मतलब कहां जाती हु नहीं लेकिन फिर जाती हु, मतलब कहां? जावेदने बुलाया है ऐसा कुछ?

शमीमा बानू: हां।

प्रश्न: हां तो इतना तो पक्का है की तुम्हे पता था की वो रशीद के साथ, जावेद के साथ गई थी। इतना पक्का है। जावेद के साथ गई थी और जावेद के वहा नोकरी करती थी। दो दफा लखनौ जा के आई थी जावेद के साथ तो लखनौ क्या काम के लिए गयी थी? वो कुछ बोला था? वहा क्या काम किया उसने जावेद के साथ?

शमीमा बानू: जावेद के साथ गई थी और आई तो बोली अम्मी हमने पूछा क्या काम से गईथी, तो बोले सामान ले जाने का और सेल्समेन कैसे करते है ऐसा करते है।

प्रश्न: और कीतनी बार इशरत बाहर गयी?

शमीमा बानू: ये तीसरी बार है।

प्रश्न: लखनौ के बाजू में कही गई थी?

शमीमा बानू: हां उसके रिश्तेदार थे वहा पर मगर जगह का नाम नहीं मालूम।

प्रश्न: किसके रिश्तेदार थे?

शमीमा बानू: वो जावेद का वो बता रही थी मुझे मालूम नहीं वो कोन था, क्या था। उनके रिश्तेदार थे वो बता रही थी। उनकी बीवी का भाई था, उनके रिश्तेदार थे, भाई थे।

Gujarat Police released this transcript after questioning Ishrat’s mother, Shamima Jahan Sheikh. Excerpts:

Q: We have information that she had gone out on two or three occasions?

Shamima: This was for the second time. She had gone to give interview for the second time.

Q: So you believe somebody would have trapped her on the pretext of offering a job?

S: That precisely is what I believe. The one who offered her the job trapped her.

Q: She was with Javed. So you think Javed could have also trapped her?

S: I do not know who he was. She (Ishrat) used to say ‘Ammi, there is an office in Mumbai where I have to work on the computer and will get a salary of Rs 3,000’. So I permitted her.

Q: If she has to work on the computer then she can go to Mumbai from Mumbra and return by evening. Then how did she remain out for four to five days? This means that she would have been taken somewhere else on this pretext.

S: I can’t know all this. (She) Would have gone for computer job because she knows computers. It was he only who had offered the job and there is no problem doing the job.

Q: Who said so?

S: What’s his name? What name did you mention?

Q: Rashid?

S: Yes, Rashid. He was saying that there is nothing to worry. Everybody will be working in the office and the job is not anything otherwise…It’s Javed’s office in Mumbai where she had to work.

Q: Now tell us, how did it happen? What did Rashid do? Rashid has also told us that you had also had a meeting?

S: He (Rashid) said he had arranged (for) them to speak over phone. Rashid has a phone through which the talk was arranged.

Q: With who?

S: With Javed. He asked me if I will permit my daughter to work so I said if it’s working in the office, it’s not a problem. I asked how much you will pay? He said Rs 3,000 will be paid.

Q: But when she stopped coming to the house for four to five days then you would have asked Javed that when you don’t stay in the office, how does it take four days?

S: He (Javed) said that they have to go for official work. He said (they) will have to go out as there is some office work. As in people have to be told how the thing works, like salesman do.

Q: How many times did she go out? We know how many times she had gone out. First you said she had gone out only once but she had gone out more than once.

S: Three times, this was the third time.

Q: First time?

S: May be for a week.

Q: The second time?

S: Second time for about four or five days.

Q: This was for the third time. Then you would have asked where all did she go? Where did she stay for an entire week? It is but natural for a mother to ask so.

S: She said at his relative’s place in Lucknow.

Q: Who gave that money?

S: Javed…in my daughter’s hand.

Q: Where did Javed call?

S: Sometimes downstairs and sometimes upstairs at the STD, but very rarely there. Most of the times Rashid used to come and pass on the message. Rashid has a mobile phone.

Q: Whenever she had to go out, who used to escort her?

S: Rashid used to take her.

Q: She had gone on Friday morning. What time?

S: 6 ‘o’ clock.

Q: Who gave her the message? How did she know that she has to go?

S: There was a phone call.

Q: Two times she had gone with Javed to Lucknow. So with what work had she gone to Lucknow? Did he say something?

S: She had gone with Javed and on her return told me that ‘Ammi I had to take some goods and do what salesmen do’…this was for the third time

Q: Where in Lucknow did she go?

S: To his (Javed’s) relative’s but I do not know the name of the place…I do not know who he is…Javed’s sister’s husband, his relatives, brothers.
