Monsoon arrives in south Gujarat, southern parts of Saurashtra


Ahmedabad, 16 June, 2014

People in various parts of Saurashtra and south Gujarat welcomed Sunday’s round of showers as monsoon’s first rain. The weather department states the monsoon has reached southern prats of the state including Veraval and Surat and it will reach the remaining parts of the state within a week.

It should be mentioned that on Sunday, Saurashtra’s Kodinar witnessed 16 inch rain. Mendarada had 10.5 inch rain while Junagadh was wet with 8 inch rain. Vanthali, Sutrapada, Una-Diu experienced 6 inch rains. Rajkot district’s Dhoraji, Upleta, Gondal bet had 6 inch rain. Jamnagar, Amreli and Porbandar districts also witnessed rain.

For safety purpose power was switched offed in Kodniar and 10 other villages. Even telephone service was affected due to this.

In South Gujarat, Vansda, Umargam, Songadh had showers of monsoon upto 2 inch.

Weather department’s note: The Southwest Monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, some parts of north Arabian Sea, south Gujarat and south Madhya Maharashtra, remaining parts of Konkan, some parts of north interior Karnataka, most parts of south interior Karnataka, some parts of Rayalaseema and south coastal Andhra Pradesh and some more parts of west central Bay of Bengal. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) passes through Lat. 21° N / Long. 60° E, Lat.21° N /Long. 65° E, Veraval, Surat, Sangli, Bellary, Nandyal, Bapatla,Lat.18° N / Long. 86 E, Lat. 22° N / Long. 90° E, Cooch Behar and Gangtok.
