One of the top Gujarati actors of stage and cinema world Upendra Trivedi is no more.
He passed away in Mumbai after brief illness.
Well-known as ‘Abhinay Samrat’ due to his excellent acting in Gujarati play ‘Abhinay Samrat’ Upendra Trivedi represents the golden era of Gujarati cinema.
Padmashree and Pandit Omkarnath Thakur award winner Upendrabhai directed national award winner Gujarati film ‘Manvini Bhawai’.
Upendrabhai is brother of Arvind Trivedi who played role of Ravana in TV serial Ramayana.
Originally from a village called Kukadia in Idar belt of north Gujarat, Upendrabhai’s parents were settled in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. Upendrabhai later settled in Mumbai to his elder brother’s house. In early years, he worked as coolie. He would lift bins for Rs. 2 per day. He also worked as labourer in umbrella manufacturing factory in Mumbai after his father who was a mill worker in Ujjain suffered paralysis. Trivedi won prizes in college in Mumbai in drama.
Upendrabhai would play small roles in Gujarati films to earn some money to pay college fee. He did 8-10 movies like Vanraj Chavdo, Mehndi Rang Lagyo etc.
He got first major break in Gujarati film Jesal Toral. Ravindra Trivedi was actually making a Hindi film and Upendrabhai was signed as villain. However due to dispute between Sanjay Khan and Leena Chandavarkar, the idea of Hindi film was dropped. Later Ravindrabhai worked for Gujarati film Jesal Toral and Upendrabhai was chosen as hero. Ravindrabhai had chosen Upendrabhai due to his performance in Gujarati film Abhinay Samrat. Also Upendrabhai had worked as radio artist.
Jesal Toral was a super-hit Gujarati film. For a famous song ‘Pap taru parkashe Jadeja’ a small water body was created in Filmistan studio in Mumbai and coastal effect to that water was added by using fans.
In Gujarati drama Abhinay Samrat, Upendrabhai played 7 different roles.
