The In-charge DGP of Gujarat, P P Pandey had personally monitored the development and ordered the crime branch, Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) and other concerned police machinery in the state to ensure the arrest of Vadodara based Parul University’s founder president Jayesh Patel, who was on the run for almost four days, following the sensational allegations of rape of a nursing student of his institution, at the earliest, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Dabhoi division of the district S L Bhatt today said.

66 year old Jayesh Patel was finally caught last night by the LCB of Vadodara police from Asodar crossing on national highway 8 in neighbouring Anand district. His medical examination was done in Vaghodia today.

Mr Bhatt, who is supervising the sensational case, today said that the ATS, crime branch and other parts of the police machinery was working day in and day out to nab the absconding culprit. ‘DGP sir was himself monitoring the matter and had instructed the machinery to nab him at any cost. With the help of ATS and crime branch he was located with the help of a secret mobile number which he was using since his being underground. He was roaming at many places including Rajasthan,’ the DySP said.

He said that the police would seek at least two weeks remand for Patel from the court and interrogate him thoroughly.

Patel was nabbed while he was moving towards Vadodara from neighbouring Rajasthan in a vehicle. His vehicle was stopped near Asodar crossing and he was arrested. He was taken to Vaghodia police station where the case of rape has been lodged by the victim, a second year girl student of nursing of the university.

The case and allegations of lewd behaviour by elderly Patel with some other girl students including a model had created lot of anger against him. His effigies were burnt in the city and a bandh call was also given against the incident. Even the chief minister and education minister has instructed for strict action against him. His arrest happened on a day when a video purportedly showing him in conversation with the family members of the victim had emerged.

Patel had twice contested unsuccessfully on Vaghodia assembly seat on Congress ticket and later switched over to BJP which expelled him soon after the incident.
