Rain threat to lessen, Garba goers gearing up to make up for loss

Ahmedabad/Rajkot: In a respite to the Garba lovers, the met department today did not issued any heavy rains warning for the coming days giving some hope for the remaining four nights of Navratri, the most liked and colourful festival of Gujarat, to remain some-what dry and full of fun.

However the met bulletin says that till the morning of October 10 the last day of Navratri this year, there might be light to moderate rains at isolated places. However after 10 th morning the weather is likely to remain dry. Meaning at this juncture only one night of Navratri that too the last one is likely to be guaranteed dry.

Rain also occurred in some parts of Saurashtra today with Rajula, Savarkundala and some other areas of Amreli and Gir Somnath districts seeing over two inches of rain. Dhatrwadi 2 dam in Amreli fill up to the brim owing to the recent spell of rain and was close to overflow. Some parts of Central Gujarat including Vadodara also saw some showers.

But till this evening many other parts of the state including Ahmedabad, which had seen around an inch of showers yesterday and many spells in the days before, were more or less ‘rain-less’.
In the last 24 hours 140 talukas of 28 districts had experienced rain with Mangrol in Surat seeing maximum 76 mm or around 3 inches.

With the first bulletin in last over a week with no heavy rain warning, the Khelaiyas (Garba participants) would like to make up for the loss of the first six days in the remaining four nights.

Owing to rains since October 1, the first day of Navratri, a lot many public Garba festivals including the government sponsored Vibrant Navratri at GMDC ground here have been virtually washed away. The state monsoon average has soared to over 90 % with many districts reaching almost 100 % figures.

The met scientists attribute the late rain phenomenon to La Nina effect this year which causes late spells of monsoon rains.
