Surat:
Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will participate in a candle march organized in the textile hub city of Surat in Gujarat this evening to protest the demonetization and GST move of the Modi government on the first anniversary of the implementation of the decision to scrap old Rs 500/1000 notes on November 8 last year.
Earlier Rahul arrived here at 11 am today and went on to meet power-loom operators and workers at Krishna Power loom in Ashwini Kumar locality in station road of the city. He is also scheduled to meet women associated with embroidery work and interact with local traders at Sanjiv Kumar Auditorium in Adajan Pal Raod.
In the evening he will participate in the candle march which would start from Gandhi statue in Chowk Bazar and end at Vivekanad statue in Makai Pul area. The total distance between the points is less than half a km.
Rahul earlier talking to newsmen here said that the decision of demonetization was an attack on the economy of the whole country. It has caused great damage.
He also alleged that the GST in its present form has decreased the Indian competitiveness with countries like China. ‘We had repeatedly requested the BJP, Modi ji and Arun Jaitley ji to not to implement it like this. GST is one tax one nation and we had clearly told them to implement it like that with 18% upper limit. But they implemented it with five tax layers. We had told them in all possible ways formally, informally, from the front and behind to not to do so but they did not pay heed to it. We had told them that it was not about Congress or BJP it was about the competitiveness of India with countries like China. GST has damaged the small businesses of Surat which could have countered the Chinese competition. They now say that is has broken their legs. GST must be reformed,’ he said.
