Industries and business in Gujarat suffer estimated loss of over 1500 crores due to truck operators strike

The industries and businesses in Gujarat have suffered a loss of an estimated over Rs 1500 crores due to the pan India strike of Truck operators even as it entered in the 4 th day today.

Transporters are opposing the daily change in the price of diesel, significant rise in insurance costs and wastage of time at toll booths, re-imposition of 2 per cent TDS on freight value as well as rise in presumptive tax.

Though Vegetables, fruits, milk, medicine, petroleum products and some other essentials have been kept out of the purview of strike which commenced from July 20 yet from the third day yesterday, heat was felt in availability of vegetables and fruits at many places across the state including Ahmedabad. Auction of some items at marketing yards have also been stopped due to strike.

Milk and medicine supply however is unaffected.

Raw material supply to various industries in Guajrat have also taken a hit. The tune of the production loss so far is somewhat less due to use of earlier stock of raw materials being utilized. Supply of finished goods have also been adversely affected due to the strike.

Lakhs of trucks in Gujarat were off the road.

An office bearer of the Akhil Gujarat Truck Transport Association (AGTTA), which was leading the strike in Gujarat, claimed that transporters resorted to the extreme measure following a steep rise in their input costs and want measures from the government that would remove uncertainty and reduce costs.

He said that their national level representatives were waiting for a call from the government to resolve the issues and ensure early end of the strike which if continued would have more serious effect on day-to-day life.
