CM Rupani launches five day Sabarmati river cleaning mega drive, large number of common people also participating

Ahmedabad: On the occasion of the world environment day today, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani launched the five day river Sabarmati cleaning mega drive in which a large number of common people are also participating.

During the five day drive by the AMC named Swachch Sabarmati Maha Abhiyan which is to continue till June 9, the river would be cleaned between Dufnala/Torrent power to Vasana barrage along riverfront on both sides of it in the city.

 

On the day one today, more than an estimated 8 to 9 thousand people participated in the drive which was formally started by the CM who went to the dried up river bed behind Sabarmati Ashram here. His wife Anajliben, MoS home Pradipsinh Jadeja, Mayor Bijalben Patel, Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra were also present on the occasion.

CM Rupani said that this drive would create a history. He also elaborated on the importance of cleanliness of water bodies on the occasion and lauded the people’s participation in large numbers in it.

Today the cleaning drive will take place between Subhash bridge and Dadhichi bridge. It will continue on June 6 between Subhash bridge and Indira bridge, on June 7 between Dadhichi bridge and Gandhi bridge, on June 8 between Gandhi bridge and Vivekanand bridge and on June 9 between Vivekanand bridge and Ambedkar bridge.

The initial phase of the cleaning drive had earlier started with flushing out existing water in river Sabarmati to downstream area by opening the gates of Vasna barrage and also by deploying heavy duty pumps and use of ‘bak nali’ method in order to remove dead water. The AMC also diverted waste water lines and prevented dumping of waste/drainage liquid in river Sabarmati on permanent basis. The garbage collection from river bed which was started today is in fact the final phase of the mega drive. An estimated 250 tons waste is likely to be removed from the rive bed during the five days drive.
