Gujarat BJP MLA found guilty in earth quake scam, fined by HC
Ahmedabad, 27 September, 2010
BJP MLA from Radhanpur, Shankar Chaudhary, has been found guilty in Gujarat earthquake fund misuse scam. The Gujarat High court today ordered Chaudhary’s trust to pay Rs 20.93 lakh with 10% interest and also to deposit Rs 25000 in Gujarat High Court.
Chaudhary has been found guilty of having siphoned off the government fund in the name of quake relief fund for a school building that his trust did now own. The High Court has directed the government to carry out CID(Crime) investigation against Chaudhary if he is involved in any other scam.
According to the PIL, filed by a social worker from Radhanpur, Shri Farsubhai Goklani in 2007, Chaudhary had fraudulently obtained Rs 20.78 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to construct a building. Vivekanand Vikas Mandal, a trust that has Chaudhary as one of the trustees, used to run a school— Nalanda Kanya Vidyalaya— in a rented building. Chaudhary obtained the money and used it to construct a building somewhere else. Calling this a fraud, Goklani had filed the PIL seeking HC’s intervention.
