The city of Ahmedabad will get a garden exclusively for women tomorrow. The garden form women is developed by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) on request of the Governor. It is located next to Mahakali mandir, behind the ISKON mega mall.
According to AMC officials, Gujarat Governor Kamla Beniwal had urged the AMC to develop an exclusive garden for women in western part of Ahmedabad. The Principal Secretary to Governor had sent a letter to AMC in this regard, following which the AMC sent a list of gardens, from which Nova village garden on SG highway was selected by the office of Governor.
Nova village garden has an area of 25334 square meter. It has entrances in three directions. There are two fountains in the shape of fish and umbrella inside the garden. There’s a 12 ft wide and 1300 meter long walking track that has undergone anti-dust treatment. Four high masts and 64 decorative light poles are other attractions. The loan is being maintained with modern sprinkler system. The wall of the garden has been built using Dhrangadhra stone. A 25 square meter office is used to maintain the garden. There are 12 wood concrete and 12 china mosaic benches. An underground tank has been built to maintain the greenery. Labor room, and wood-concrete chabutaro(bird feeding tower) are other notable structures ready in the garden.
The garden will be inaugurated on International women’s day (8th of March). As an experiment, the garden will be reserved for women and children upto 14 years during 12.00 noon to 6.00 pm. During this time, males will not be allowed to enter inside the garden.
The ACM initiative is not the first of its kind in Gujarat. Ahmedabad will be the second city in the state to have a garden reserved for women. The other city in the state where such garden is present in Porbandar.
Porbandar’s Maharani Rupaliba garden is reserved only for women and children. Gents are not allowed to enter inside the garden. The garden was developed over a 7930 square meter land in year 1949. Mehta group’s Sheth Nanji Kalidas Mehta had donated Rs 51000 to develop this garden. Then Saurashtra government had also donated Rs 35000. The garden was developed at a cost of Rs 860000 in that time. The garden was dedicated to the women of Porbandar on 17th of August 1949, Janmashtami. From day one the entry of gents was banned. This practice has been continued till date.
