Gujarat Congress President Arjun Modhwadia, former Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela and Gujarat Congress high-command Mohan Prakash were detained today by police in Ahmedabad after they challenged the government to stop them from marching to Gandhinagar assembly, for which they were not permitted by police and district administration.
State Congress had today organized a rally near Gandhi Ashram in Ahmedabad to protest against assembly speaker’s ruling to suspend the leader of opposition from ongoing budget session of Gujarat assembly. The prayer meet at Gandhi ashram and party’s rally nearby was permitted by police.
However, while speaking in this rally, Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia asked party workers to march to Gandhinagar.
“Gandhinagar is not Pakistan, those who want to stop us can stop, but we will march,” Modhwadia said just before ending his speech.
As soon as the Congress leaders and workers attempted to march towards Gandhinagar, they were detained by police by applying some force.
It should be mentioned that Gujarat Congress was not permitted to hold a rally in Gandhinagar due to ongoing board exams, code of conduct effective in the district, and ongoing assembly session. Congress had accepted this, and had canceled its march to Gandhinagar, announcing to shift its proposed public meeting in Gandhinagar to Ahmedabad.
However, today in their public meeting, Congress leaders in their speech suddenly asked party workers to march to Gandhinagar, violating the law of the land through non-violent means.
Anticipating that such thing could happen, the Police was already present in full force here already.
The leaders and party workers were detained with some force and were taken to different locations.
Meanwhile in Gujarat assembly, the Congress MLAs staged walk out opposing detention of their leaders and denial for discussion on this in the house.
