Ahmedabad, 29 September 2012

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) today formally absorbed Smit Patel, an important member of India’s ICC Under-19 World-Cup winner team into RIL fold. Mr. Parimal Nathwani, Group President (Corporate Affairs) of RIL presented a letter of appointment to Smit in a small investiture ceremony. Smit’s father Mr. Kamlesh Patel, his coach Mr. Tarak Trivedi, GCA secretary Mr. Rajesh Patel and RIL Senior Vice President Mr. Pinakin Dikshit remained present on this occasion.

With its substantial stake in Gujarat, RIL began with tapping a very talented young cricketer Parthiv Patel and brought him to RIL’s fold in the year 2004. Later on in 2009, another star cricketers Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja and Irfan Pathan thereafter were also taken in RIL. The list is strengthened with addition of Smit Patel, said Mr. Nathwani and added that encouraging budding and brilliant cricketers is the objective. Mr. Nathwani is also Vice President of GCA.

Born on May 16, 1993 at Ahmedabad, Smit Kamleshbhai Patel scored unbeaten 62 runs recently in ICC Under-19 World Cup match against Australia and contributed substantially in India’s victory and clinching the trophy.

Mr. Nathwani said that the news about selection of Smit in West Zone team for ensuing Duleep Trophy tournament came as a great joy and pride not only to Smit but also for entire Gujarat and Reliance also.

Promoting cricket and cricketers in RIL date back to the hey-days of Naroda Textile Mill of Reliance when the company had its own corporate cricket team. Sponsoring of 1986 world-cup and Mumbai Indians’ team for IPL’s twenty20 format are the major bench-marks of promoting sports at RIL. The sports complex, particularly the cricket ground at RIL, Vadodara is comparable to any other national or international ground for cricket matches. Promotion of other sports such as billiards and snookers, adventure sports etc is also carried out by the company. RIL is supporting teams of Gujarat playing qualifying tournaments of the recognized sports bodies and authorities.

RIL continues to pursue our founder chairman’s philosophy of supporting talented youths, sports and sportsmen. RIL, under the stewardship of our chairman and managing director Shri Mukeshbhai Ambani, has always banked upon its young talents for excellence in its business operations. RIL is also engaged in activities that lead to a path of sustainable development. Community welfare, creating infrastructure in villages, business growth leading to energy security, greening of its industrial complexes, supporting and promoting art and culture etc are equally closer to our heart.

RIL is proud to have Smit Patel as Executive (Sports), Mr. Nathwani added.
