Gujarat assembly elections 2012 in two phases on 13th and 17th December:model code of conduct effective

The Election Commission of India today announced the dates of assembly polls in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. With this, the model code of conduct is now effective in both states. In 2002 the elections were announced on the 28th of October, and in 2007 the announcement date was 11th October. This time the election commission has chosen little early date to announce the polls.

As per the announcement made by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Sampath in a press conference in New Delhi, the Gujarat elections will be held in two phases.

Date of issuance of notification:17th November 2012
Second phase notification: 23 November 2012
Final date of filing nominations: 24 November 2012
Second phase: 30th November 2012
Scrutiny of nominations:26 November 2012
Scrutiny of nominations for second phase: 1 December 2012
Final date of withdrawal: 28 November 2012
Final date of withdrawal of nomination forms for second phase:3 December 2012
Polling date:13 December 2012
Second phase polling date: 17 December 2012
Counting: 20 December 2012

In 2002 the then election commissioner Mr. Lyngdoh had announced single phase elections in Gujarat. But in 2007, the state witnessed two phase polls. Gujarat had earlier witnessed two-phase poll in 1995 too. This time the Election Commission has declared two phase polls.

While the Gujarat assembly’s five year term ends on 17 January 2013, Himachal Pradesh’s term ends on 10 January 2013. Both states traditionally witness the assembly poll season together, be it 2002 or 2007.

While 13 December is Amaas and Thursday while 17th December is Monday.

87 seats: Entire south Gujarat, Saurashtra and small parts of Amdavad district. The districts of Valsad, Navsari, Dang, Tapi, Surat, Bharuch, Narmada, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Junagadh, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Porbandar, Surendranagar, Ahmedabad district(only rural part) will go to polls in first phase.

95 seats: Central Gujarat, Amdavad city, north Gujarat and Kutch: The districts of Vaodara, Dahod, Panchmahal, Kheda, Anand, Amdavad, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Banaskantha, Kutch will go to poll in second phase.
