New Delhi, 16 October 2012
The government of India has cancelled Adani Group’s multi-product 1,840 hectares SEZ special economic zone (SEZ) in Mundra (Gujarat) for alleged violation of three rules, including that the site was land-locked.
The entire project is spread over 10,000 hectares and 6,500 hectares of this already has SEZ status. The issue raised by the government pertains only to the 1,840 hectares.
“Adani Ports and SEZ’s project did not conform to contiguity norms and violated a rule that requires the SEZ site to be vacant before approval is sought for the tax free zone. Besides, the site was land-locked . They had violated these three norms. Because of this, we have denotified their SEZ,” an official told PTI.
The developer can re-apply through approaching the Board of Approval in commerce ministry to seek fresh permission.
The note for the cancellation was signed by Commerce Minister Anand Sharma yesterday.
