Ahmedabad, 31 October 2012
In a major setback to the Congress party in Gujarat, the Mayor of Gandhinagar Mahendrasinh Rana today joined the BJP with two municipal Councillors.
Gandhinagar is one of the only two Municipal Corporations ruled by the Congress party.
A few days back Mayor Mahendrasinh had publicly opposed the party’s possible move to field an outsider in Gandhinagar.
Rana was facing disciplinary action after his letter went public through the media.
However he wrote another letter to the state Congress President and praised Narendra Modi as a Vikaspurush. He also raised questions about the Congress party’s poll promises.
Rana has now officially joined the BJP along with two Councillors Hansaben Modi and Subhash Pandave.
The first election of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation was held in April 2011. While Congress secured 18 seats, the BJP could win only 15 seats, thanks to BJP rebels who had joined the Congress after they were denied a ticket by the BJP. BJP man Pravin Patel who joined the Congress party just before the elections and secured victory with his panel in ward no. 4 is now Standing Committee Chairman of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation.
