Ahmedabad, 14 January 2014
It is banned in Vadodara, but there’s no clarity on whether it is allowed in other cities of Gujarat or not. These are called Chinese tukkals. They are used during Uttarayan evening every year(14 and 15 January) across Gujarat. Thousands of people purchase such tukkals and later on float them in the sky in the evening on Uttarayan. If you locate some roof top with good height, you can see thousands of tukkals floating in the sky together in the direction of wind on this day. This has been comparatively a new phenomena on Uttarayan. In earlier years, such Chinese tukkals were not available in market, and very few people with good expertise, used to tie desi tukkals on kite string, putting candle inside. Inn those years Uttarayan celebration was considered over soon after sun-set. However the trend of Chinese tukkals has extended festivity hours beyond sun-set. Now people enjoy Chinese tukkals in the dark. The scene is worth enjoying on the spot, and any photo or video just can’t do enough justice. However to give you at least some idea, presented above is the video captured at wall city Ahmedabad’s Dhal ni pol. Please adjust your screen angle/brightness to enjoy the video properly.
