Teesta’s custodial interrogation sought in fraud case

Ahmedabad, 11 March 2014

Special prosecutor Ajay Choksi representing the Gujarat government on Tuesday opposed anticipatory bail plea of Teesta Setalvad and reiterated before additional sessions judge H C Vora’s court that Teesta should be arrested and interrogated in police custody for fair investigation in the Gulbarg museum case in which funds had allegedly been siphoned off.

-If Setalvad is granted anticipatory bail, it would have an adverse effect on society because she has encashed sentimental values after the riots.

-Not only would the victims of the riots feel injustice [had been done to them] but the entire Muslim community would feel cheated.

-People cannot be allowed to get away with embezzlement of donated money.

-Setalvad’s NGO had collected funds by claiming that it needed US $1.2 lakh every year for functioning. The accused used to gather the riots victims and then photograph and videograph them for projection before the international community and to create anguish among Muslims. It was a scam, the prosecutor claimed.

-Setalvad and her husband, Javed Anand, did not reveal certain facts before the Supreme Court about filing of an application in the city court.

Hearing will continue on Wednesday

Meanwhile, Teesta’s NGO, Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), in an affidavit filed in the court said that the government’s allegations are malicious, and there’s a nexus between the Modi government, the city crime branch and her former aide, Rais Khan, who has been made a witness in the case by the investigator. Khan is being used as a proxy in this malicious war and that this has now been exposed.
