If there is competition in the power distribution sector, it will improve efficiency and “control tariff”, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said here Friday.
“If there is competition in power distribution, it will improve efficiency and control tariff,” Jaitley said at an event to lay the foundation stone of two transmission sub-stations besides dedicating one station to the nation.
The Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2014, that aims to bring reforms in the power sector and protect consumer interest was introduced in the Lok Sabha last week.
The government earlier mentioned that the proposed legislation would promote efficiency in operations, improvement in quality of supply of electricity in the country and competition in the country ,resulting in capacity addition and benefit to the consumers.
The government has set a target of doubling electricity generation from 1 trillion units to 2 trillion units, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said recently.
