Auction, Jail for non-payment of vehicle tax in Gujarat: Bill passed
March 26, 2015
Gandhinagar
Gujarat Assembly today passed Gujarat Motor Vehicle Tax(Amendment) Bill, 2015.
Non-payment of tax for years long period will allow government to seize the vehicle and auction it. Those involved in tax evasion repeatedly will face maximum six months prison after court procedure.
At present, the dues are collected through revenue procedure. It is time consuming procedure which delays the process. At the end of the process, neither the vehicle is in working condition, nor dues are collected.
Once the vehicle is seized for non-payment of tax, the owner will need to pay tax in three months period, or otherwise the tax officer will auction the vehicle.
Tax evasion will be considered serious offense and invite maximum six months prison.
Small vehicles like auto rickshaw for 3-6 passengers, agriculture related or commercial tractors, small vehicles for specially abled people will stay unaffected from the amendment passed today. Buses and Trucks will also stay unaffected as tax for such vehicles is collected for specific time.
Rules of auction will be finalized later on.
