Blog: Dissecting a job selection list in light of reservation debate

Rupang Bhatt, Ahmedabad

While studying the ‘anamat’ or say reservation issue that has been in discussion in Gujarat these days due to Patidar agitation, I came across this recent document on Department of Industries, Government of Gujarat website which shows select list of junior industries inspector 2015.

Let’s look at this document as test case. You would find that two boys on merit rank 15 and 16 have been put in waiting list, while those on merit rank 58, 92, 114, 223, 268, 46 and 872 have been confirmed for job!

Well, merit number 58, 92, 114, 223, 268 and 872 have been placed for job because they fall in 33% woman reservation quota introduced by our women-lover present Chief Minister Anandiben Patel.

Even in this female quota or say Anandiben quota the candidates on merit number 268 and 872 are placed because they are from Social and Economic Backward Class(SEBC or popularly known as OBC) ad Schedule Tribes(ST or tribal) segments. Gentleman on merit rank 46 is male but he has secured job because he is from Scheduled Tribe(ST) class and therefore enjoys reservation benefit.

So two boys on merit number 15 and 16, Gopal Buddhadev and Vivek Bhatt who have been placed in waiting list because they took birth in Brahmin and possibly Lohana family will need to lose this job opportunity due to what they may certainly feel an unjust reservation system.

So what next?

Well, these two bright boys may migrate abroad in search of fair and proper opportunity, or they may join anti-reservation agitation anytime in future when it happens(for Patidar community it’s already happening), or if they find some other job to do, they will for lifetime not be able to forget this injustice at the beginning of their career(job career I mean, otherwise during college they may have already experienced this) and continue to remain unsettled in this system and this country.

There can be such 100s of lists across government websites and offices.
