Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for a five nation tour on June 4 covering cover Afghanistan, Qatar, Switzerland, the US and Mexico.
PM Modi will visit Afghanistan on Saturday where he will hold talks with Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani and inaugurate the Afghan-India Friendship Dam, earlier known as Salma Dam, in Herat province.
“Meeting between Modi and Ghani will provide an opportunity to discuss the current situation in Afghanistan and how the two countries can cooperate further for promoting peace and stability in that country,” said External Affairs Ministry Spokesman Vikas Swarup.
Asserting that the completion of the dam project represents culmination of years of hard work by about 1,500 Indian and Afghan engineers and other professionals in very difficult conditions, Swarup said it also highlights India’s continued commitment to Afghanistan’s reconstruction and development. He said the dam will help irrigate 44,000 hectares of land.
As per the schedule PM Modi will visit Switzerland on June 5 and 6 where he will hold meetings on bilateral trade and foreign investment.
“During the stay, Modi and Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann will hold discussions on bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest,” said MEA official.
From Switzerland, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to the US on June 7 at the invitation of President Barack Obama, with whom he will review the progress made in key areas of defence, security and energy.
During his stay, he will also address a Joint Meeting of the US Congress.
The Prime Minister will also be travelling to Mexico on a brief working visit on June 8 at the invitation of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. The main objective of PM Modi’s visit would discuss cooperation in areas such as space, energy, agriculture and science and technology among others. In September last year, during his United Nations visit in New York Modi held talks with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.
