Gujarat govt. ends uncertainty over 7th pay commission, approves it from retrospective effect of January 1

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Government today approved the implementation of the recommendations of 7th pay commission in the state with the retrospective effect of January 1, 2016 according to which over eight lakh employees and pensioners of the state government, panchayats and grant in aid institutions will get benefits from the month of August and the seven months arrears (since January) will be paid later.

The recommendation would put an additional annual burden in excess of Rs 8500 crore on the state exchequer.

Deputy Chief Minister cum Finance Minister of the state Nitin Patel today said that in the cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today the implementation of the 7 the pay commission from the retrospective effect of January 1, 2016 has got approval. The payment benefits for the state government, panchayat and grant in aid institutions would start from the effect of August 1 while the arrears for the seven months would be paid in phased manner based on the recommendations of the secretaries committee made for the purpose. Also the seven allowances on which the central government has also not taken any decision so far would be studied by the committee of secretaries led by chief secretary once the union government finalizes it. It would later be put before the cabinet after due procedure and a decision on the allowances would be taken later accordingly.

Mr Patel said that the decision was taken by the state government taking in to consideration the old tradition of implementing of a pay commission after its implementation by the central government.

Notably, the then Chief Minister Mrs Anandiben Patel on July 31, days before quitting her post had announced that the seventh pay commission would be implemented in the state from August 1, however it could not till she was formally resigned on August 3. Later Vijay Rupani took oath as the new CM on August 7.

The state cabinet today took up the matter and ended the uncertainty on it.

Mrs Patel had on July 31 announced to implement the recommendations from August 1, the day when she herself sent a letter to the central leadership of the ruling BJP expressing her desire to quit the chief minister’s post. She finally resigned from her post on August 3 but the recommendations have not yet been implemented.

The recommendations would benefit over 4.65 lakh Gujarat government, panchayat and grant in aid institution employees and more than 4.12 lakh pensioners.

The Centre had on July 25 notified the implementation of 7th Pay Commission for Central Government employees from January 1.

Employees of class-4 to class-1 will get a hike of 14.60 per cent to 25 per cent in their salaries.
