Municipality by-polls: BJP claims victory on 10 of 14 seats it contested, Congress claims gain

Gandhinagar: Gujarat BJP today said that it has won 10 municipality seats in by-polls today.

BJP said: out of 17 vacant municipality seats, 16 went to by-poll, of which 14 were contested by BJP and 10 of them have been won by BJP. These ten seats include Sanand, Lathi, Amreli, Shihor, Dahod, Mahudha, Vallabh Vidyanagar(2 seats), Upleta and Bhayavadar. Of them, three contestants of BJP had been victorious unopposed(Sanand, Mahudha, vallabh Vidyanagar).

Meanwhile Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki in his tweet said: One more tight slap to the anti-people govt of Gujarat, Gujarat Congress wins 6 of the 13 nagarpalikas in the by-polls. Before elections Congress​ had only 1 of these 13 Nagarpalikas, this shows the mood of people, who are eager to root out BJP from Gujarat. Congress statement issued in the evening claims that the party has won seats in Vijapur, Valbhipur, Mahuva, Shihor, Palanpur where earlier BJP won winner. Congress also claimed that one independent who won at Thasra was supported by Congress and even on this seat the party had achieved gain. Solanki said, Congress had earlier only one seat of Palanpur municipality with it.

State Election Commission of Gujarat had declared election programme for by-polls of 17 vacant municipality seats on March 4.

Notification of by-polls was out on 10th March while polling took place on 2nd April followed by counting today.

Vacant seats were in Vallabhvidyanagar, Shihor – two seats each, while Vijapur, Sanand, Lathi, Amreli, Valbhipur, Mahuva, Dahod, Bhuj, Mahudha, Thasra, Palanpur, Upleta and Bhayavadar municipalities – one seat each.
