Anti-dumping duty imposed on clear float glass: four companies in Gujarat to benefit

Ahmedabad: India has imposed USD 22.89 anti-dumping duty on clear float glass from Iran for a period of five years according to the finance ministry notification. This decision has been taken in response to the applications made by Gujarat based prominent glass making companies.

Clear float glass is used in construction, refrigeration, mirror and solar energy industries. The product is a superior quality of glass. The commerce ministry’s investigation arm — Directorate General of Anti dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD) — in the separate probe had concluded that these products were dumped into India and it has caused material injury to the domestic industry.

Three companies including Gujarat based Saint-Gobain India had filed the application for dumping probe of this product. There are two other producers of this glass in the country – Gujarat based Asahi India Glass Ltd and Gujarat Guardian, the DGAD had said.

Gujarat Borosil Ltd also makes finest quality sheet glass in the country.

Countries initiate anti-dumping probe to determine if the domestic industry has been hurt by flooding of below-cost import. As a counter-measure, they come up with duties under the multi-lateral WTO regime.Anti-dumping steps are taken to ensure fair trade and provide a level-playing field to the domestic industry. They are not a measure to restrict import or cause an unjustified increase in cost of products.
