Congress wiped out in Amethi ahead of local MP Rahul Gandhi’s elevation as party chief
December 01, 2017
New Delhi: As the talks for Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s elevation is doing the rounds, the trends of Uttar Pradesh civic election results predict that the people of Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of the Gandhi scion, are not in mood to choose Congress to rule them.
In Uttar Pradesh, while the Congress party had not fielded any candidate from Amethi town, its candidates from Jais was at a poor fourth after several rounds of counting.
As per initial trends, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates are leading in both Amethi town and Jais seats.
In Musafirkhana, an independent Brajesh Agrahari was leading, while in Gauriganj Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Rajpati Devi was ahead of her rivals. In Jais, BJP candidate Mahesh Sonkar was leading.
BJP’s Chandrama Devi has secured 991 votes in Amethi Nagar Panchayat chairpersons seat, while at second spot is Lais Hawari (Independent) with 511 votes, SP’s Chunna Singh is at third position with 336 votes.
With Rahul Gandhi as member of parliament, Amethi early this year elected all four non-Congress MLAs in assembly elections, three of them from BJP.
A BJP leader said they plan to use the electoral drubbing of the Congress in the Gandhi stronghold of Amethi in a big way during campaign for the Gujarat Assembly elections.

He attributed the victory to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision and BJP chief Amit Shah’s able guidance.
Adityanath said the BJP will now look forward to achieving the goal of one hundred per cent success in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
He also pointed out that the Congress had been wiped out even in its Amethi stronghold.
