7000 take part in 17th National UCMAS Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: UCMAS which into Abacus-based visual math education, today organized the 17th National UCMAS Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition in the city. The largest competition of its kind in India saw a participation of over 3000 whip-smart kids in the 4-12 years age group from across Gujarat; a record breaking participation of 7000+ is expected from across India.

Students were taken through calculation tests, brain power drills and proficiency assessments as they attempted 200 math problems in just 8 minutes. The competition was judged by representatives from Guinness World Records, Limca Book of Records, Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records.

An award ceremony to felicitate the outstanding performances in the competition will be held tomorrow, September 2. The education minister of Gujarat, Shri Bhupendrasinh Chudasama will be the chief guest to grace the occasion. Grabbing eyeballs on the day will also be the formation of a human abacus by 2500 school students from India, who will strive to be documented in the Guinness Book of World Record for creating the largest ever human abacus.

Speaking about the UCMAS program, Dr. Snehal Karia, President & CEO – UCMAS India, said, “Competitions are an integral part of UCMAS culture. They are a celebration of talent and competitive spirit of our students. But the 17th National UCMAS Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition is truly special for two reasons – one, the surge in number of participants with at least 2 lakh students registered at any point in time and two, the formation of a huge human abacus that will strive for a Guinness World Record to celebrate the 25th anniversary of UCMAS.”

Established in 1993 in Malaysia, today UCMAS has a network of 6000+ centres across 80+ countries and has trained over 2.5 million children around the world in the past 25 years. Out of the 6000 centres, 2000 centres are in India, making it the largest UCMAS network in the world.
