Congress candidate will be selected by high-command, will file nomination on Monday: Chavda

Jambughoda: Even as the main opposition Congress in Gujarat is facing ’embarrassment’ of sorts by seemingly being unable to find a candidate for Jasdan assembly by-poll, the state president of the party, Amit Chavda today claimed that it would be finalized by the ‘high-command’ in Delhi and the chosen one would file the nomination papers on Monday the last day of doing so for December 20 election.

During the snehmilan event of Congress in this central Gujarat town in Panchmahal district Chavda said that the selected candidate would file the nomination papers at 11 am on Monday.

Notably, Jasdan prior to revolt of Kunvarji Bavaliya in July this year was deemed a bastion of Congress where the party has seen defeat only once.

Bavaliya, a five time former MLA from this seat who was also Loksabha MP for one term, had resigned from the seat and Congress party on July 3 this year and joined the ruling party the same day. He was inducted as a minister also that day. He had alleged that Congress was ignoring senior leaders like him.

Bavaliya had filed nomination papers as BJP candidate yesterday.

The by-poll to be held on December 20 is being seen a s war-of-prestige for both BJP and Congress. Last date for nomination is December 3 and the names could be withdrawn till December 6. The counting of votes will be done on December 23.

Bavaliya belongs to majority Koli community on this seat in Rajkot district. Patel or Patidar community has also a strong presence on this seat.
