2.05 lakh cusecs water outflow from Ukai dam
September 29, 2021
Gandhinagar: At 4 pm today, Ukai dam in South Gujarat had over 2.75 lakh cusecs inflow and 2.05 lakh cusecs outflow in river. The dam was 91.68 per cent full at 104.10 meter level against full level of 105.16 m. 1100 cusecs outflow was also diverted to canals.
Gujarat’s second largest dam Ukai has at present more water storage than the largest dam of the State which is Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam. While Ukai has 6,797.53 MCM gross storage at 4 pm, Sardar Sarovar has 5,959.71 MCM gross storage which is around 63 per cent of full capacity.
Thanks to heavy rainfall in upstream areas of neighboring state, the gates of Hathnur dam had to be opened for release of surplus flood water in the direction of sea via Ukai dam and further portion of Gujarat through river Tapi.
The level of water in Ukai dam is a matter of concern for the citizens of Surat as the city can witness flood situation in low lying areas such as Rander if 2.50 lakh cusecs or more water is released from Ukai dam.
The administration is aware about this and therefore so far the peak of inflow has been maintained at around 2.05 lakh cusecs much lower than 2.50 lakh cusecs. As rainfall has halted in upstream catchment areas of Hathnur, and the level of water has been kept lower in anticipation of heavy inflow in advance, the situation is in control at present and Surat doesn’t need to worry at this point.
