Only 203 out of 1,027 govt schools in AAP ruled Delhi have principal; NCPCR seeks explanation

New Delhi: The apex child rights body National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) during the visit in the government schools of Delhi, led by a team under the NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo, have found various discrepancies with regard to the infrastructure and other administrative aspects.

As per the data published by the NCPCR, out of the 1,027 schools under the Department of Education only 203 schools have headmaster/acting headmaster/ principal.

The NCPCR in a letter written to Delhi Chief Secretary Vijay Dev dated 12th April, 2022, have listed the discrepancies found by them, which includes vacant post of the Head of School (HOS) in most of the schools. Regarding the importance of HOS, the letter stated:

“A HoS or Principal has an important role to play in ensuring the schools have positive learning environment towards quality education, and to develop a caring, inclusive culture in schools.” The absence of school principal or headmaster will also have implications for safety and security of children, it further stated.

The chief secretary has been asked by the NCPCR to share the factual position about the vacancies of such posts and the action taken by the Education Department by April 19.

Bharatiya Janata Party MP from North-East Delhi during his visit to Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Sabzi Mandi, Timarpur, Delhi had found major problems related to the hygiene in the school building. Finding these kind of discrepancies can lead to serious accidents in the school, NCPCR has written another letter to the Chief Secretary of Delhi, which stated:

“In view of the seriousness of the issue, your good office is requested to take urgent action in the matter, and an action taken report in this regard may be shared with the commission within seven days from the receipt of this letter.”

Talking with Aaj Tak news channel, NCPCR chairman while explaining that dependency on private schools has increased in Delhi, he mentioned the comparative data of the national average of 22% schools functioning in the private sector while 46% of the schools in Delhi are run by private institutions. He also said about notifying the Delhi government regarding gender bias in the government schools of Delhi where female students are provided with courses of only knitting and embroidery on the name of vocational training.
